The Private Security Industry in the United Kingdom has radically changed over the last year. The industry is changing for the better, as the Security Industry Authority (SIA) raises standards and drives out businesses that are not legitimate.
You should be aware of the implications of the introduction of licensing for contracted-in Security Officers.
Since March 2006 all contract Security Officers, Door Supervisors, Wheel Clampers, Public Space CCTV Operators, their Supervisors, Managers and Company Directors must hold a SIA Licence.
It is a criminal offence to work in England and Wales At present without a Licence and can mean a £5,000 fine or up to 6 months in prison for those breaking the regulations.
Work is underway to include Scotland and Northern Ireland in the near future. Contract security personnel without a Licence need to have an LDN (Dispensation Notice) which can only be issued by an SIA Approved Contractor. These organisations are some of the best providers of Private Security Services in the United Kingdom.
Some companies however are fraudulently claiming to be SIA Approved Contractors and checks should be made on the SIA website if in doubt. Lists of personal licence holders are also located on their web-site (http://www.the-sia.org.uk), as are those who have had their licences revoked.
